VIZZ™ (aceclidine ophthalmic solution) 1.44%: New Treatment for Presbyopia Approved by the FDA on July 31, 2025
What is it prescribed for?
VIZZ is used in adults to improve near vision in people with presbyopia, also known as age-related difficulty seeing up close.
What is the name of the drug and what does it do?
The drug is called VIZZ™ (aceclidine ophthalmic solution) 1.44%. It is an eye drop that helps improve focus on nearby objects.
How does it work?
The drug is called a cholinergic agonist which works by causing the pupils to constrict slightly. This increases the depth of field in the eye, improving the ability to see things clearly at close distances.
What did the research discover?
Clinical studies showed that daily use of VIZZ improved near vision within about 30 minutes to 1 hour of use. The effect lasted several hours and reduced the need for reading glasses.
What are some of the side effects?
Some warnings and precautions are;
Blurry vision:After using the eye drops, your vision might get blurry or dim for a little while. Don’t drive or use machines until your sight is clear again, especially at night or in low light.
Eye problems (retinal tear or detachment):Very rarely, people can get serious eye problems where part of the eye (the retina) pulls away. Doctors should check your eyes before you start using the drops. If you suddenly see flashing lights, floating spots, or lose vision, get medical help right away.
Iritis (eye inflammation): If you’ve had eye inflammation before, use the drops carefully and let your doctor know.
Other more common side effects are:
- Temporary dim vision, especially in low light
- Eye irritation, burning, or redness
- Headache
What are the dosage recommendations and how is it prescribed?
Instill one drop in each eye, then repeat after two minutes, once daily. Contact lenses should be removed prior to the instillation of VIZZ, and may be reinserted 10 minutes after instillation. If more than one topical ophthalmic product is being used, the products should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
